Foods can splatter in the microwave, leaving food deposits, greasy buildup, and burnt smells. Scrubbing dry can make it difficult to clean and cause scratches on the interior. Using steam will help loosen any stuck-on food. This means you can wipe it away easily without causing damage by using abrasive materials or aggressive chemical cleaners.

Place 1 cup of water into a microwaveable glass bowl or measuring cup. Add a few slices of lemon or 2 tablespoons of white vinegar.
Place the bowl into the microwave. Heat on a high setting for either 3 to5 mins or until the water begins to boil. Once boiled, leave in the microwave for a further 5 mins with the door shut to steam the food. Carefully open the door.
After allowing the microwave oven and contents to cool down to a safe temperature, take out the glass turntable and roller ring. Wash either in hot, soapy water or put in the dishwasher (if confirmed by the manufacturer that it is dishwasher safe). Rinse well and dry thoroughly before replacing.
Using a clean microfibre cloth dampened in warm water or mild washing-up liquid, wipe all surfaces including the ceiling, side walls, floor and inner part of the door. This will help to remove any loose food particles and greasy residues.
If there are any stubborn stains, use a soft sponge or non-abrasive brush. Be careful when cleaning around the waveguide cover (this is usually a small section on one of the interior walls) and do not get the cover too wet or allow any water to enter the vent holes.

Use a soft, lightly damp cloth to wipe the control panel. Clean the keypad, handle, and door frame. Do not spray any cleaners onto the buttons, display screens, and electrical elements. Use a mild cleaning agent compatible with the finish on your appliance as directed by the manufacturer.
Use a clean, damp cloth to wipe down the inside of the microwave, then leave the door open for a short period of time. If there is still an odour, place a shallow dish containing some bicarbonate of soda inside the microwave. Turn the microwave off and leave it to sit overnight. Make sure you remove the dish before using your microwave again.

The first step to cleaning a microwave after a food explosion would be to soften the mess. Using hot water and either lemon or vinegar will produce steam to make splatters easier to wipe off. Washing the turntable will also help to remove any greasy buildup. Finally, wiping and ensuring there is good air circulation will also help get rid of any strong burnt smells.
