Cleaning window blinds is an often-overlooked household task, allowing dust, dirt, and grime to build up on the slats over time. Dirt accumulates on each slat, leaving the blinds looking dirty and lowering the quality of air in your home. Removing the blinds from the window frame is not an easy process and might cause damage to the sensitive tilt system or mounting brackets. However, once you learn how to clean window blinds without taking them down, it will save you time while refreshing your window coverings. You can use common household materials to clean aluminum, wood, or fabric blinds.
The following steps explain how to clean window blinds without removing them using safe, effective DIY cleaning methods:

Lower all the blinds and flatten the slats by pointing them downward. This will align them into a single surface, making it easy to remove dust.
For quick maintenance, make your own slat cleaning device. Attach two microfiber cloths to each arm of a pair of kitchen tongs using rubber bands. Hold the tongs around one slat and slide them gently from one end to the other to remove dust from both sides. This is a double-sided trick that will clean both the top and bottom of each slat in one go. Start with the uppermost slat and work your way downwards, since any dust you dislodge will fall on unclean slats below.

Ensure that you have a vacuum with a soft brush attachment in case of heavy dust or when the surface is textured. Set the vacuum to the lowest suction setting. With one hand gripping the bottom rail of the blinds, use a back-and-forth movement to brush each slat with the soft brush attachment.
After cleaning the front surface of the window blinds, turn the tilt wand to reverse the slats. Clean the rear surface of the window blinds in the same way from top to bottom.
In case the screen has sticky residues or grease, you should mix a gentle liquid cleaner. The process involves dipping a clean microfiber cloth in warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Leaving it moist but not dripping wet, clean each stained panel, and dry the surface immediately using another clean microfiber cloth.

Cleaning window blinds without having to take them down saves time and helps protect your window blinds. It involves using the vacuum cleaner to remove loose particles, using the microfiber tongs method, as well as the use of cleaners that will not damage the material of the window blinds.
