HOW TO PROPERLY CARE FOR WOODEN KITCHEN SURFACES.

By Blessing | Kitchen Maintenance

Wooden kitchen surfaces are valued for their natural distinctiveness and timeless appearance.  However, they also respond to moisture and heat in ways other materials do not. With proper care, a wooden countertop or worktop can remain beautiful, durable, and functional for decades.

How to care for a wooden kitchen worktop

All it takes is basic maintenance to ensure your wooden kitchen surface lasts long and stays good as new. Follow these steps:

1. Guard against water damage

Water remains one of the major factors affecting wooden kitchen countertops. Any standing water can soak through the wood and cause it to swell, warp, and ultimately deteriorate due to fungi or mold.

After cleaning, dry the countertop properly and avoid letting any wet plates, sponges, or towels remain there for a prolonged period since even a tiny amount of water left overnight may spoil the finish. Wooden worktops that have just been installed should be treated more carefully for at least several weeks until all the protective oil has dried out properly.

2. Clean wood surfaces the right way

Daily cleaning of kitchen surfaces made of wood is done using a small amount of warm water and a small quantity of washing-up liquid. The surface should be cleaned using a soft cloth.

Abrasive sponges and harsh chemicals that are used as a multi-purpose cleaner can cause damage to the protective layer on wood, hence leading to cracks on the surfaces.

Spills should be cleaned immediately. Liquids such as wine, coffee, juices, and vinegar may penetrate the surface of the wood. It is very important to take care of the wooden surfaces adjacent to the sink since dryness of this particular part is necessary for avoiding black spots and swelling.

3. Protect wood surfaces from heat

Never put hot cookware like pots, pans, or even baking tins directly onto the wood surface, as this may scorch or mark the wood. A trivet or a heat-proof mat should be used instead.

Aluminum cans, iron, copper, or steel may leave spots if allowed to sit on the wooden surface for a long time, especially in cases where there is moisture. Pigment-rich foods and spices like turmeric may stain the surface if spillages are not cleaned up instantly. Never use a wooden counter for cutting food. Cutting directly on the wood surface leads to scratches and marks from knives; instead, make use of a plastic chopboard.

4. Apply oil to the surface for long-term protection

Oiling helps keep wood well-nourished, resistant to water, and beautiful. Use food-grade linseed oil or Danish oil that should be applied with a lint-free microfiber cloth.

Apply some oil to the surface and distribute it evenly to form a thin and even layer. After the absorption of the first layer, add another one for increased resistance. The first layer usually takes several hours to dry out, whereas other layers require more time, eight hours or more. Multiple thin layers provide greater protection than one thick layer.

The surface that is well protected makes water form droplets rather than penetrate the wood surface. If water no longer forms droplets or the surface begins to look dry and dull, it’s time to apply another coat of oil.

5. Choose quality craftsmanship for lasting results

Whether you’re installing a new countertop or planning a future kitchen renovation, choosing good-quality hardwood is the foundation of long-term maintenance. Kitchen countertops made from high-quality hardwood are stronger, withstand daily wear and tear better, and respond more to regular cleaning and oiling.

Conclusion

Well-maintained wooden surfaces in the kitchen provide both visual appeal and longevity to your kitchen space. Ensuring protection against heat, water, and scratching, along with the cleaning and oiling of such surfaces, goes a long way in keeping them aesthetically appealing and functional for years to come.
